Question
hi,we bought a bunny about 3weeks ago,we think it is about 2months old and female, all is going fine, she is let out her hutch daily and given the run of the house and is excellent with the kids, however just lately she has started makeing these strange noises, kinna like a growling/mewing and thumping her legs, she only does this around your feet then she attempts to jump up at you,its seems quite aggressive, although she hasnt bitten yet i am concerned she might ,especially with the kids,is this normal?

Answer
She is trying to mate with you and thumps her feet because she is mad that you won't respond.  Circling is a classic sign in mating.  I know she is young but I currently have a 3 month old that is doing the same thing.  It is annoying and drives me nuts.  She will even scream out like she is in pain with the shrill of death.  I took her to my work and had the doctor look at her and he said she was fine, that she just matured to early.

It is spring time and they are all acting nuts.  Just don't let her near a buck whatever you do.  Also having her spayed will stop this behavior.

Rabbits thump for 2 reasons and 2 reasons only -- 1.  To get your attention because they feel danger  2.  To tell you they are ticked off at you.

I sympathize with you and yes if she gets mad enough at you because you won't 'mate' her she may very well bite you.  It is the same thing they do with bucks that refuse to mate.  I got the living poop beat out of me by my doe when I tried to pick her up and I am highly trained in handling rabbits.  Honestly its the first time I have ever seen this in a rabbit so young but it can happen.

If you don't plan on breeding her please have her spayed as soon as a vet is willing to do it.  If you are going to use her for breeding you will just have to deal with it.

I always tell people how much I can't stand doe's because of their hormonal fits.  I have several house rabbits and they are all bucks and none of them are obnoxious, well occasionally one will try to mount me or pee on me but I don't neuter mine because they are used in my breeding program so I guess I have to expect an occasional hormonal response.

I am so sorry San.  I hope my information at least helped you.

Good luck with your little ball of hormones.

Sincerely

Pam
