I found a hurt bunny....HELP!!!

Question
Hello, I found a hurt bunny(wild) that a cat got ahold of. He has a few skin lacerations and a couple of puncture wounds. I flushed the wounds with water and Betadine. I applied neosporin and wrapped the wounds. Also it seems to have lost some mobility with the hind end, but still has a slight reflex. I am concerned about the pain. I am not sure if you can give it anything for the pain? Do you have any suggestions? I am unsure what to feed it? The rabbit is about 6 weeks old. Can you please help me?!!!!

Thank You!
~Lorretta

Answer
Dear Lorretta,

If the baby was mauled by a cat, it's critical to get the baby on a fluoroquinolone antibiotic (Baytril (enrofloxacin) or ciprofloxacin) to prevent systemic Pasteurella infection, the most common cause of death in baby animals injured by cats.  Please go here:

www.rabbit.org/vets

to find a good vet who can help with this, and give the baby a good examination to see what else might be necessary to save her.  Pain management would be wise, and we've found that metacam and tramadol work very well together.  Please ask the vet about this, but don't try any over-the-counter meds on this baby, as they might do more harm than good.

If the baby is several weeks old, she doesn't need milk.  Provide a bowl with clean water and plenty of freshly picked grass (no pesticide or fertilizer spray!) and/or fresh grass hay.

I hope she'll be fine, and that you can release her soon!
