Rabbit Testicle

Question
My 9 year old dwarf has a testicle that is small, shrivelled, and spotted.  The other is larger, full and pink.  His behavior is normal.  Could this be cancer?  Does he need to see a vet?  What if we can't afford surgery or treatment?  Will he be in pain?  Thank you for taking my question.

Answer
Hi Stephanie

It could be cancer or it could just be old age.  When rabbits get up there in age they lose their ability to reproduce.  The testicles will shrivel up.  The spots are a cause for concern.

I would take him to the vet.  A good vet will tell you up front what the costs will be.  I have always believed that life is about quality.  If your rabbit is eating and drinking and pooping and peeing and isn't lethargic or running into walls then I would just let him be (after the exam of course).  If a vet thinks your bunny is suffering he may tell you that its best to put him down.  Don't ever let anyone force you into this.  You know your bunny better than anyone and its up to you to decide when his quality of life is no longer there.

You will know if your bunny is in pain.  He will act much different.  Please just take him in for an exam and talk with the vet about options.  Your bunny could still have a few good years left so you just never know.

Good luck and your bunny is very lucky to have such a loving parent.

Thanks for caring

Pam
