urine on butt

Question
I have a 4 month old dwarf rabbit, that has a "wabbitat" cage that has wire bottem and pull out tray for him to go to the bathroom. (he does have mats and stuff so he does not hurt his feet) Well yesterday I went to pick him up and i felt wet (urine) on his bottem. I wiped it off, and took him to play in his play area. Well, he has a travel  cage  that is in his play area  where he goes to the bathroom and gets food/water. Well he went it to use the bathroom (he doesn't use a litterbox)  and when he came out he jumped on me and his behind let a little wet stop on my pants. I wiped him off and tryed to check him out, and i did not see anything that showed that is was irratated loosing fur like in cases or urnie scald. There is no change in his behavior.  Do you think I'm overanalizing  this and  that its  becuase he JUST went to the bathroom or its somthing i need to start worrying about that can turn  into a serious problem? Thanks

Answer
Hi Kelly

I would guess that he is probably using one of his mats as a litter box.  I would check them all out and see if he is peeing in the same exact spot.  Sometimes when they do this their little butts will get wet.  I use the wabbitat cages also and my fuzzy rabbits get wet hiney's all the time.  It is mostly because they are always using the same area to go potty.  I would just keep an eye on it and make sure you keep his bottom really clean.  If the fur starts to get really matted or it looks burned then I would start to worry.  I generally check mine every day and I will wipe the area with some unscented baby wipes.

If he is using the same spot to pee it may be a good idea to try to get him to use a litter pan.  This might be easier for him to keep clean.  You also want to watch for any hunching when urinating which could indicate a kidney problem.  Also make sure that his anus is free so he can get to his cecotropes.

Other than that I wouldn't worry to much.  Furry rabbits will get mats.  You just need to keep him groomed the best you can.  You obviously know what you are looking for so I am sure he is in good hands.

If you have anymore questions please let me know.

Thanks
