Clumps of shedding hair

Question
Hi!  My rabbit (a dutch) is shedding ridiculous amounts of hair, and in clumps.  In fact, he's starting to get bald spots.  His skin looks fine - not red or itchy, just a little dandruff.  He doesn't seem bothered by the shedding (when I pet him he's not in pain or anything).  I know some shedding is normal, but this much?  The bald spots are worrying me...
Thanks in advance!

Answer
Dear Julia,

Rabbits can sometimes have a major "coat blow," but it's not normal for there to be bald spots, especially if they are flaky.  Please read:

www.bio.miami.edu/hare/furloss.html

and find a good rabbit vet to help you here:

www.rabbit.org/vets

It could be fur mites, which are easily and safely treated with Revolution/Stronghold (selamectin) from the vet.

I hope that helps.
