Question
QUESTION: my pregnant bunny gave birth last night to one baby bunny, but the baby was dead when we found him, is it possible that she will give birth again. if so, when?

ANSWER: Hi Cait

Usually when they have babies they have them all at once.  On a very rare occasion they can be pregnant in both uterine horns and another baby or 2 can be born but it is usually within 12 hours of each other.

I am so sorry about the loss of your baby bunny.

Sincerely,

Pam

QUESTION: dear pam, i am pretty sure my rabbit is in labor again, she looks like shes having a really hard time. she is panting hard, her back end is somewhat wet. she has kept her legs open from the time i first saw her. she doesnt seem to know what to do, she keeps moving around from place to place, her back end out. im really nervous! HELP!

Answer
Hi Cait

If it has been this long she probably has a kit stuck.  The very best thing you can do for her is to get her to a vet immediately.  They can give her pitocin that can help produce stronger contractions and help get the baby out.  In worse case scenario they may have to do a C-section.  Occasionally kits will get a condition where they grow to large and the doe will be unable to deliver them.  It is very possible that the doe can die from this condition without immediate care from a veterinarian.

Please take her to the nearest 24 hour animal hospital.  If you don't know where there is an animal hospital in your area that treats rabbits please check out this site it may be helpful:

If you can't find anything there then immediately start looking through your phone book and calling any veterinarian you can find.  Look for one that treats exotic pets.  They should have answering services.  If they don't treat rabbits they should be able to refer you to the nearest place that does.  Remember that exotic animal veterinarians are not as common as small animal veterinarians so it may be a 2 or 3 hour drive so its imperative that you go immediately.

Good luck and I really hope your bunny makes it.

Pam
