separating bonded bunnies

Question
We've had our male bunny for over a year.  We purchased a baby doe and they instantly bonded.  They have been sharing a cage and our family room, since she was "under age" but she is now almost 11 weeks old and we haven't have the male neutered...yet.  We have been considering having one or two litters (on a pre-order basis from friends and family), but will only follow through if we have responsible buyers ahead of time.  We would then neuter our male right afterward.  I have read opposing opinions on websites re: whether or not the two separate cages should be "within smelling distance" or not.  We have enormous, homemade cages for both of them, which can be placed side by side where the bunnies can touch noses and lie next to each other...or we can place them in separate rooms.  We're so sad to have to separate them at all, since they are such buddies.  Is this something we just need to try or is there a recommendation for the least amount of stress?  We would also have to limit one at a time to the family room during their exercise/play times.  They each get LOTS of attention from the whole family, since they are our only pets.  Thank you so much for any advice!

Answer
Hi Jeri!

The best thing you could do is not to let them breed, there are many many risks associated with breeding, some times it results in the death of the mother plus all the babies and I'm sure you wouldn't want that to happen.

There are hundreds and hundreds of baby rabbits in rescues all around the world that may never get a home to call there own because people keep breeding more and more.

Since they are already bonded it's best to keep them side by side, otherwise they'll just get sad and lonely not being near each other, when the time comes to get them both neutered they'll need to be done at the same time and they should stay together at all times

Hope this helps
