Question
Hello,my bunny, Thumper, is about 7yrs old now, and has had previous digestive issues, where he will stop pooping for a bit, and we have always treated this with this green herb stuff they give us and this orange liquid which we give 1cc from, 3 times a day. But, its a little different this time. I noticed he has been pooping this clear gooey stuff, like, i havent seen any poop balls for a few days now, not a week yet, a few days. My sister forgot to mention this to the vet, but he gave us the same 2 things he usually gives us. Is my bunny dying? Have you ever heard/seen this? He is a house rabbit, and we have timothy hay in his cage all the time, fresh water, and fiesta bunny food. I am worried sick about him, I dont want him to die so painfully. Please Help Me!!!

Answer
Hi Evelyn,

no regular fecal pellets for a few days is a big problem.  If it's been a few days he's virtually stopped eating hay.  Otherwise he's going to have a huge, bulging gut.

You have to get him to a good rabbit vet immediately.  If you have a 24-hr emergency vet I would suggest going there.  If not, THE FIRST THING tomorrow morning, as it has been a few days of no fecal pellets being produced.

A good rabbit vet needs to examine him because it could be more than one thing.  It could have been trapped gas that caused him pain and caused him to stop eating.  It could be a partial blockage somewhere in the gi tract.  It could be something else.

In any case, just keep him on hay, timohty hay pellets only (no junk) and water.  No fruits, veggies, etc.

I have no idea what the vet gave you as you don't give any info as to what it is or what it does.

If you believe you need to find a better rabbit vet, go to:

www.rabbit.org/vets/vets.html

and find a House Rabbit Society recommended vet in your area.

Write back if you want.  I'll keep your guy in my prayers.  And as a general rule, please, at the first sign of your guy being off his regular diet, get in touch with the vet, or take him in.  You don't want gut issues to wait so long.  It weakens rabbits and even if that doesn't kill them, sometimes they aren't strong enough to take the cure.
