Injured Rabbit Paw

Question
We have a rabbit, less than a year old, that has just injured his front paw. It looks like his nail in what I can only call the "thumb spot" has been ripped out. The site is bleeding and I can't seem to make it stop. There are no after hours clinics in my area that treat rabbits. Other than cleaning the area, what can I do till morning when I can get him to the vet?

Answer
Honestly, it's not much to worry about :-)

First off, these type of wounds bleed a LOT and that's totally normal. You can try to staunch the flow of blood with flour or corn starch.

Second, this really isn't an uncommon injury and 99% of the time the wound will heal without any need for medical intervention. He may be reluctant to use that foot for a day or so, but unless it continues to bleed, becomes infected, or causes him prolonged discomfort, I really wouldn't worry about it.

Just keep an eye on the toe and give him a few extra treats. Hope that helps!
