Question
How do you toilet train a rabbit?, do you need kitty litter?

Answer
Hi Holly,

no, never use kitty litter.  It's bad for their lungs.

What you need is:

1.  A neutered/spayed rabbit.  If they are not fixed by a good rabbit vet, the hormonal drive will be too strong to allow them to have good litterpan habits.

2. A nice sized rectangular cat litterpan placed in the area/corner they like to use.

3. A rabbit safe litter such as Yesterdays News or hardwood wood stove fuel pellets.

4. Fill up the litterpan and every day, scoop out the soiled litter, spritz the soiled area with vinegar and wipe dry, and replace the used litter with some new litter.

Generally you want to put litterpans where they tend to want to normally use the bathroom.  When they are out of the cage, exercising in the house, you will need to see where they want to mark (drop pellets, pee a little) and place a second litterpan there as well.

For more info, go to the House Rabbit Society web site and search on "litter training" - the site is www.rabbit.org.  You can also search for good, experienced rabbit vets in your area here as well.
