Do rabbits carry scabies?

22 10:39:41

Question
I was interested in knowing if any type of rabbit carried scabies. I know my building is highly infested with rats, mice and etc. I have four children that love this rabbit. I really need to know immediately. Thanks

Answer
Dear Charlette,

Rabbits do not carry scabies mites asymptomatically, but they can get them, as can humans and other mammals.  Treatment is inexpensive and safe:  Revolution (selamectin) from an experienced rabbit vet:

Most rabbits do not harbor the mites that cause scabies, and if your rabbit has mange, it is not likely to be contagious to humans.  But if the bunny does have this problem, please have it treated ASAP.  It is very painful and can cause even worse health problems in the long run.  I have known of rabbits who died from untreated mange.

I hope this helps.
