odd discharge

Question
We have had our dwarf lop for 2 weeks, and he is 3 months old. He is alert, eating and drinking normally. But, we just noticed a small puddle of liquid, with the consistency and colour of egg yolk. We understand that rabbits don't vomit, so presume it has come from the other end. However, all stools are normal - even ones dropped very close in time to this odd discharge. We feed him hay, pellets, carrot pieces as treats, and fenugreek bites. I hope this is enough information for you to help us, as we are slightly concerned as he is quite young. Many thanks, Victoria

Answer
Dear Victoria,

I know this will sound weird, but to positively I.D. the liquid, you may have to mop it up with a tissue and give it a sniff.  From your description, it sounds like concentrated urine, but only your nose will know.

If it smells very foul, it could be nasty, liquid cecotropes, which can be a sign of a very serious health problem.  Please see:

and find a good rabbit vet here:

if the liquid has a bad smell, and is not urine (which smells like...well...pee).

I hope this helps.
