QuestionQUESTION: My elderly (10) holland lop female, Sissy, suddenly started tugging with her teeth at the toenails on one foot. She has taken them down to the nubs. She is a full house bunny, and we change her litter box daily. She has always groomed well and has never had a health problem related to hygiene. I am very concerned that some sort of fungus is going on. How can I treat her. We simply do not have good rabbit vets here.
ANSWER: hi she really needs to be seen by a vet but i think i would get some atheletes foot powderand treat it with that to start with and see if it clears up.she may have stepped on something and got a splinter -check her foot out.

QUESTION: Checked for splinters first thing -- didn't find anything but soreness close to the toes and the toes themselves. Athletes foot powder would be extremely toxic to a rabbit; I'm amazed an expert would suggest we use such a thing. We bathed the foot in a natural wash from the health foot store that has tea tree oil in it and applied an ointment that contains propolyis -- a natural, non-toxic anti-fungal. The ointment immediately soothed the foot, and Sissy has not bothered it today. Also, she climbed the stairs today after not doing so for almost a week and a half. We will not take her to a vet here -- everyone with rabbits we know of including ourselves has a vet and rabbits horror story to tell. If there is a fungus, it is in the nail so athletes foot powder would do nothing for that. So, again, I'm wondering if there isn't a better treatment then what we are already doing.
Answerhi dorothy you have made me learn a bit from you -sorry about the athletes foot remedy i should have known it was toxic,it sounds as though your treatment is working -i will take it onboard and any time i might need it , i will try it.
