Rabbit Weezing Couging

Question
I bought this rabbit for my sister i think about 2 to 3 years ago. So its roughly about 3 years of age. Yesterday i walked in the room and noticed his nails were extremely long and my sister being 9 years old doesnt know how to cut nails and what not and while i was telling her she needs to take better care of it and to tell others when the rabbit needs something. I noticed that its breathing was off it sounded like it has a stuffed nose almost like a cold it also coughs from time to time. I then noticed that the litter we keep in the cage changed from the pellet litter to just regular cat litter granted it was only in there for about 2 days. I thought that would be the problem being i work around a lot of dust and know what its like to breath small particals of stuff in. So i took out everything in the cage over night except a shirt that my sister gave it to sleep on. I went to the store and bought it some bedding and its regular litter, snacks, and cleaning supplies for the cage.

While i was cleaning the cage i noticed that the rabbit was weezing louder and coughing more often. He is eating normally fully alert the only time he acts strange is when hes having one of the coughing weezing sneezing breathing fits.

My sister says he does it from time to time. My mom claims hes having a hair ball i never thought they had hairballs nor do i believe they actually do. We dont have the money for a vet. So if you can please give me some insight on what you believe to be wrong with it and if you can list anything  that you can think of to help it.

Its highly appreciated Thank You

Answer
Unfortunately, those are definitely the signs of a respiratory problem. You should start saving up for a vet visit, and in the meantime, definitely keep him away from dusty litters and chemicals/artificial fragrances. It may also help to shake out his hay to make sure it's not excessively dusty.

But again, a vet's visit is definitely in order. Rabbits are just as smart, social and loving as dogs or cats, and they require just as much care and attention. They can easily live to over 10 years old and will likely need to see a vet more than once during their lifetime. It's a good idea to set some money aside for those vet visits so that the bunny can have the best care possible.

Good luck!
