Filling in burrows

We have a female rabbit that has had a couple of litters. Papa got neutered but Mama didn't. Twice now Mama has dug a new burrow then filled it back in. Any ideas why she filled the hole instead of using it?

Dear Nancy,

She either could have babies down the hole and is instinctively covering the opening so predators can't find them, or she is having false pregnancies.

In either case, she needs to be spayed for her health, since unspayed, unbred female rabbits have a very high risk of uterine cancer.  Please see:
