Wild young jack rabbits

Question
I found two young jack rabbits in our back field.  We are discing the field to make a pasture. One bunny was accidently ran over and killed, however we found two that are still alive and in great condition.  After the discing is over this afternoon should I return them in the same spot where we found them?  I don't want to keep them because it's not fair to them, and I know they would do better out in the field. What is the best thing to do for these little guys?  I can't tell their age.  Both have all their fur and eyes fully open and run fairly efficiently!  They are both probably about 5 inches long.  Any help is appreciated!!  (916) 997-2827 cell #

Answer
Dear Trudi,

It's difficult to say whether the mother will return if the field is drastically changed.  But if it's not too much of an alteration of the topography, the babies should definitely be taken back to where you found them, as she will come looking for them to feed them, usually around dusk.

You might want to search for them again tomorrow, after they've been out, to check their condition.  At this age and size, they'll be quite mobile and may not stay where you put them.  But mama will call for them when she comes, and they should be able to reunite if mama does come back.

If you are in the Western U.S., you can contact Regina Whitman for more advice.  She is an expert jackrabbit rescuer, and may be able to offer additional help.  Contact her via the Desert Cry Wildlife web site at:

If you are absolutely sure that the mother is not returning, please write back and I can help you with instructions on how to safely raise them.  But for now, avoid handling them as much as possible, as they are very susceptible to problems from the normal bacteria on your hands.

I hope this helps, and that the babies will be fine.
