Rabbit seems to be pulling hair out

Question
I have a black Satin Rabbit who is a 4 year old male.  Today I noticed that his knees are bald.  It would appear that he is pulling his hair out.  He lives out side in a hutch.  His appetite has been good.  I am very concerned for him  What should I do?  He does not appear to be loosing any weight.  I would appreciate any information you could give me.  Thanks Rebecca

Answer
Dear Kathy,

If he's really pulling the fur, I'd first re-check his sex, to be sure he's not a female having a false pregnancy and pulling fur to line the nest.  But if that doesn't pan out, please see:

You can find a good rabbit vet to help you here:

Rabbits usually do not self-mutilate out of boredom, but it's not impossible.  Life in an outdoor hutch is lonely and dull, and he may just be pulling his fur out of frustration.  To learn how to litterbox train him and make him into a wonderful indoor companion where he will be safe and part of the family, please go to:

www.rabbit.org

and click on "House Rabbits 101".  You'll wonder why you waited so long, and how you ever got along without a house rabbit!

Hope this helps.
