Question
I just ask a question to Lee about our new baby bunny being a picky eater.  It said he was maxed out to answer another question.  He had said to give her Oxbow brand timothy pellet & hay.  I was wondering if you can get that from places like Petsmart?  The brand we have is Kaytee timothy pellets, hay, alfalfa cubes & her bedding is all made by Kaytee.  We have also tried Zupremm brand timothy pellets & she want eat that either.  We have critter car for the litter.  The problem is we bough her last Saturday from a pet store we notice Sunday she was not eating except her poops & bedding.  We called Monday they told us to come by & pick up some pellets mixed with dried nuts, fruit, etc.  To get her started eating the pellets but what she does is dumps the pellets out & eats the other stuff.  We only gave her pellets today & she will not eat anything again but her poop & bedding.  We also read tonight on the internet not to give them dried fruit etc.  Which upset me that they gave us this mixed.  Lee had recommend buying that brand I mention that she should like that. Do you know if the stores will take back open bags of the pellets when it does not work?  Please cont the help!

Answer
Ok, the easier questions first.

I would be surprised if the store would take the opened bag back.  You give them a call and check, but they probably wouldn't be able to resell it again and might not take it back.

The big-box stores like Petsmart and Petco do not sell Oxbow.  It's usually found at locally owned pet stores or agricultural stores.  You can go to Oxbow's site and do a search to see if anyone in your area sells it:

The store locator box is in the upper right corner.

Oxbow is a very fine brand, all my small animals are on it.  But if you can't find it, you want to feed a brand with at least 18% fiber and no seeds, fruit, etc in it.  Food like that is like a person eating McDonalds for every meal.

And I'm not surprised they gave you a bag of mixed food.  Petstores sell a lot of things that aren't really safe for rabbits, and the staff may not be rabbit health aware to that fact.

Now in terms of getting her to eat quality feed, this may take awhile and some patience.  There could be a variety of factors involved here.  Many times when a rabbit goes to it's new home, that change in itself can cause a rabbit to not want to eat like they did before. It can take a few days or a week before the eat normally.  In addition, diet changes should ideally be made slowly.  This gives their palates and digestive systems time to adjust.  If the absolute only thing she will eat is the junk food, mix a little of that with a better feed.  An important thing would be to not overfeed her.  Then she would continue to just pick out the junk.  But if she's feed a proper amount of food, she will get hungry and eventually will come around to the new quality food.  But it may take awhile.

If you do find Oxbow, follow their feeding amounts and feed a little less of the Oxbow and replace it with the junk food.  If you can't find Oxbow, use these guidelines appropriate with your rabbits age:

Be patient, it sounds like you have a rabbit used to her junk.  Some rabbits don't want to go cold turkey, but in time, you should be able to get her over to stuff that's good for her.
