Question
Hello, I got a lionhead rabbit a few days ago. She had a seizure the next day (after I got her)that lasted 4 seconds. I didn't think of anything until later on that night. I gave her pellets that I got from the owner and gave her the same hay that the ownder had. I gave her the hay and she stepped back and she had a seizure very badly and died 45 mins later (this happend at 12am). I feel so bad and wondered what happend. The owner didn't know the sex...could the babby rabbit been to young for me to take home? I don't know what happend and now she is gone! Please help me understand what happend.

Answer
Hi Julie

I am so sorry for the loss of your bunny.  If the breeder did not tell you the age and couldn't tell you the sex of the bunny then there is also a very good possibility that they really didn't know a thing about rabbits.  An experienced breeder can usually tell the sex of a bunny the day it is born.  Sadly if the bunny was taken away from its mother this may have been what happened.  The other possibilities are infection, stress, parasites or genetic abnormalities.  Without a necroscopic examine it would be impossible to tell what caused the baby to die.  It sounds as though you did everything properly.  Not everyone realizes that you have to slowly switch the feed and that was very responsible of you.

I am truly sorry for the loss of your rabbit.  I hope that you can find peace.

Sincerely,

Pam
