Sun burn black fur

Question
We have a netherland dwarf who is black.  I have recently noticed his fur on his legs and hindquarters becoming a slight auburn color.  Was told that this is sun burn, but he is not in direct sun and has no reflection. Is there a way to correct his color before a show in 3 weeks?  Thanks for your time!

Answer
Dear Kris,

Once fur is aged/weathered/sunburned, there is no way to restore its original color without artificial dyes, which I would definitely NOT recommend, as this would be dangerous to your rabbit.

Sunburn is more common in rabbits exposed to the outdoor environment, but indoor rabbits' fur can become weathered, too, from exposure to artificial heating, light from windows, etc. It's a normal part of life.

The fur that grows in when your bunny sheds next will be dark black again.

Note that showing a rabbit is very stressful for the bunny, and is not really in his best interest.  Love your bunny for whatever color he is, and he'll be the better for it.

Hope this helps.
