Rabbit vomitting

Question
HI Dana, I am really concerned about my rabbits, i have two male rabbits one is only 4 months old and the other 2 years old. i was in the kitchen and when i went out to feed them there was vomit on the floor outside the hutch door, it had grass and rabbit food in it. it definitely came from the rabbits, i dont know which one, but i was just wondering if this was serious as rabbits are not meant to vomit?

Answer
Dear Anneka,

You're right:  rabbits lack the vomiting reflex, and should not be able to vomit.  Are you absolutely sure it was vomit?  I've seen rabbits urinate on a small pile of hay, and the resulting color change and softening of the hay made it look like someone barfed.  But they didn't.

If both rabbits are acting fine, then I suspect either (1) it's not vomit you're seeing or (2) someone got too big a mouthful of grass or something, choked, and spat it out.

If either rabbit is showing signs of distress, then pack them both up and get them to a good rabbit vet:

for examination and treatment, if necessary.

Hope this helps.
