Question
my rabbit is only 3-4 months old and it has a small hole in it from what i read i can be removed but how could it have gotten this inside of him

Answer
Dear JT,

Please don't try to do this yourself, as you might do more harm than good.  A botfly larva (warble) should be removed by an experienced veterinarian who can then determine whether additional treatment, such as antibiotics, are necessary to completely cure the leftover cyst.

The botfly adult lays its egg on wet fur, and the larva enters the skin, either by making its own hole or by entering a hole left by a biting insect, such as a mosquito.  (There are many species of botfly, and each has a different life cycle.)  The larva grows and develops inside the cyst until it's time to drop out and pupate.  At this point, the cyst is empty, but can become infected.  So it's smart to get your bunny to a good rabbit vet for treatment:

Outdoor rabbits are far more at risk of warbles than indoor bunnies, so please read the information here about litterbox training and all the information you'll need to make your bunny a happy, healthy indoor companion where he'll be safe and a lot more fun.

I hope that helps.
