Question
i used a spot on treatment for mites on my rabbit as a preventative as last year he got mites badly.  i got it from the pet shop and it states that it was safe for rabbits to use, and with his weight (he is a french lop ear)i needd to use the full tube.  this was 2 weeks ago and today i noticed on the back of his neck where i put the treatment his skin has gone flakey and fur has dropped out, he has a big bald patch where the treatment was put.  has he had an allergy to it? he seems ok in himself.

Answer
Dear Jane,

He may have had an irritation reaction to the carrier liquid of the mite medication.  As long as the skin is healing and looks smooth and healthy underneath the scabs, I wouldn't worry. But if it looks red or irritated, I'd have your trusted rabbit vet have a look:

I don't know what the active ingredient in the medication you used is, but I would not get it from a pet store.  Revolution/Stronghold (selamectin) is the safest treatment for mites, and must be purchased from your veterinarian.  Please see:

for complete information.

I hope this helps.
