QuestionHiya, I've had My giant Pappillion for just over a year now and she is a very good moulter but recently she has started to lose fur in just patches. The patches are not bald as she has new short hair undeneath but I'm a bit worried as to what is causing this. Is it the rapid change in weather, something else, or just a normal but unusual moulting behaviour? Do you think I should take her to the vets to check it out?
AnswerHi,
it sounds like she's going through her summer shed, or fall shed. The fall and spring sheds are heavier, summer and winter sheds are usually lighter. You are correct that other things can cause a shed other than when they normally happen, like stress, injuries, temperature extremes.
If you haven't been to a rabbit vet in a year, it would be good to take her in for an exam. They can check her teeth and check her for things you may not normally look for.
Go to: www.rabbit.org/vets/vets.html
for a House Rabbit Society recommended vet near you if you don't have a good rabbit vet (not all are).
