Sex of rabbit

Question
We just got two rabbits from a friend that raises rabbits on her farm.  They are both six weeks old, how do you tell what sex they are?  My friend told me that you can't tell until they are older?

Answer
Hi, six weeks is pretty young to determine sex.  At this age both are not developed greatly and many people make mistakes.

Generally what you do is separate them at ten weeks old (just in case) and around 3 months do a check.  I actually would recommend taking them in to your regular good rabbit vet and have them show you how to safely handle your rabbit to determine sex.  They are more fragile than dogs and cats and if you don't support their backs properly and they kick out, they can break their back.  So please go to a good rabbit vet and have them show you how to do it the first time.  That and you'll get the first wellness exam taken care of too.

Not all vets are good rabbit vets.  To find one near you start here:

and find a House Rabbit Society recommended vet.
