Question
I have a rabbit hutch with an outdoor cage with an attached interior section. I was told to put timothy hay inside for them to build there own nest.  Is this correct?  And how much hay should i provide for them to do so?

Answer
Hi,

I don't recommend people keep rabbits outdoors.  My suggestion would be to give them a hidey box out of wood and let them move the hay around in there, and the rest of the hutch, as they need.  Lots of hay is critical for their health, but you have to swap out old hay daily because it gets old or wet and they won't eat it.

There are too many problems keeping rabbits outdoors.  In winter urine can freeze on them and the floors, water freezes and they cannot drink, people don't realize they are in the path of wind gusts and drafts and they get sick because of it.  The hay gets wet and mold grows on it and they can die from eating moldy hay.  And they are not part of the family as an indoor pet is.
