Flemish Giant: blood after giving birth

22 10:09:29

Question
My doe just gave birth this morning to a litter of kits. I'm concerned about the blood that there is on her tail and the spots on the floor just outside the birthing wing of the pen. She seems and acts all in good spirits. Her actions were as usual when it was feeding time and the excitement that they show at that time. I'm just worried and wanting to make sure I'm not missing anything. Thank you, Chuck

Answer
Dear Chuck,

It's not unusual for there to be blood around the mama's vent shortly after birth, and even some blood on her surroundings, especially if this is a first litter.  But if you see more than a few spots, and especially if she continues to bleed from the vulva for more than about 20 minutes after the last birth, then it's time to get her to a good rabbit vet for an emergency exam, and possible intervention to prevent her bleeding to death. You can find a good vet here:

I hope mama and babies are doing well.  Please read:

Good luck with the new family!
