Question
We have made the mistake and got 5 rabbits. We were told that we had 1 boy and the mom to the other 3 babies we had. Well they told us wrong... Will a female rabbit try to be on top if it is a male rabbit or female. I know that is a weird question. We had babies today and we did have 5 in the cage. We removed the male rabbits, but had no were to but the female. So I have the new mom and another female in a cage together. Would she try to eat her babies? What would be a safe time to say they are okay? We keep them outside, We are so new to all of this and we need help... My husband should have researched this a little more before we got these things. I am curious what breed they are to?

Answer
Hello Shara!
Well you have started off like so many others getting a lot of rabbits all at once.
I will start off by saying you NEED to keep all adult rabbits ( 6mo. & older) separated at all times unless you want to breed  then you only put them together for 20-30 min thats it.
next you need to keep only the Doe with her new babies they need to be together.
remove the other doe and do not put her with the buck unless you want more babies in 30-32 days.
A doe will try to mount another rabbit if she is ready to be breed.  so its not strange.
You should check on the babies ASAP to see if all are Ok and alive, remove any dead ones.
If you go to www.arba.net you can click the breeds link and see many different breeds and if you do not have a crossbreed you should fine out what breed you have.

Please Remember rabbits are to be kept separated at all times unless you spay them and then  they may begin to fight because they are territorial so Keep them alone they will be much better. and your husband will not have to build 100 cages as I did 30 years ago.
Good Luck
Dan
