Question
QUESTION: Dear Dana,
I have only had rabbit experience for at least 1 year.  I have 2 rabbits and one of them growls whenever i try to pet her or give her food. It's like she thinks I'm giving her poison or something.  She has acted this way ever since i have gotten her.  Is she scared?  Does she not like me?  i just got my other rabbit about 2-3 months ago and whenever i try to pet her she scrunches up in a corner and i don't know whats' wrong.  Can you help me please?

(NOTE:I am only 13 years old and i don't know what else to do except get some advice from an expert.  I am very concerned about my rabbits and my mom doesn't know what to do either and she just wants to give them away to the pound but, i don't want to do that.  Please help.

ANSWER: Dear Shalyse,

First, are your bunnies spayed/neutered?  If not, it is very important for them to have this operation, especially if they are female.  Not only will this calm them down, but since female rabbits have a very high risk of uterine cancer, it could save their lives.  Please read:

Once they are calmed down by the operation, gaining their trust will be easier.  But you have to play by "bunny rules".  Good tips for gaining the trust and friendship of your bunnies can be found here:

Good luck!

QUESTION: As an answer to your question, yes, the rabbit that is growling is a female and she is spayed/neutered.  I don't know what to call it.  The one that scruches up into a ball is not yet spayed/neutered but now that i come to think of it, that might be a good idea.
         Thank You,

Answer
Dear Shalyse,

Yes, both bunnies should be spayed/neutered for their health, as uterine cancer is a very big risk in intact females.

But do read this:

www.bio.miami.edu/hare/shybun.html

for help in gaining the trust of both of your bunnies.  It is very important that you read this, and it could change everything around.

Hope this helps.
