Rabbit that digs at the carpet.

Question
I have a 1 1/2 year old female Holland Lop.  She continues to go under our couch and digs at the carpet.  We have tried putting her in her cage when she does this but it still continues.  Any answer?  Thank you

Answer
Hi,

rabbits are diggers, you need to give her an acceptable substitute.  My suggestion is to block access to underneath the house for many reasons including her safety.  You have to do this in order for her to be interested in the alternatives you will give her.   Use some untreated pine trim boards from home depot to block off couch on all 4 sides so she can't get back in.

I suggest giving her a 'diggy pile' of no longer used, clean soft cotton towels and cut up cotton tshirts in her play area.  Rabbits love digging them and nibbling on them.

The second thing to give her is a sacrificial cotton carpet.  Go to a tj maxx or a place you can get undyed cotton carpets that have no rubber backing on them, and if you can fund one with loops or fringeys all over it, she will pull out the loops of that instead of your regular carpet.

She's just being a rabbit.  You just need to give her an acceptable alternative.
