Question
Hi. I was checking my rabbit the other day and i noticed that his testicles looked all wrong. One of them is really swollen and it just dangles, it actually touches the floor! the other one just looks like a flap of skin. the swollen one has blacks spots on it. we took him to a vet and he said it should go away. can you please tell me what i might be dealing with? it has NOT gone away and I'm really worried.

Answer
Hi,

I can't really tell you becaue I haven't seen it and I'm not a vet.

I can tell you that for un-neutered males, they are able to control where their testicles are, either inside the body, or outside it in the scrotum.  They can pull them back in at will (danger, cold, fighting with another male, scared, etc).

Given the swollen appearance my gut feeling would be to take him to a good rabbit vet (don't go to the first one again).  Not all vets are good rabbit vets.  Go here:

www.rabbit.org/vets/vets.html

to find a House Rabbit Society recommended vet near you.

It could be an infection, it could be a blood supply problem to the testicle (torsion) or something else.  It could be nothing.  But a good rabbit vet is the person that needs to make that determination.  Plus they are more likely to figure it out faster, get him better faster with the right treatment the first time, and giving your rabbit superior care for your dollar.

And also, your boy is sexually mature now, you need to consider getting him neutered to be a well-behaved house rabbit anyway.  Otherwise he'll be sexually frustrated all the time and spray you once in awhile.  Getting him neutered will allow him to remain the same bunny he was before he hit sexual maturity.  So it's probably a good thing to find a good rabbit vet now anyway.  If the testicle has to go because of a problem, you want a good rabbit vet doing the procedure.
