dirt digging and covering up after nesting

Question
Hello.
My name is Jang Park. I had 4 bunnies and grew together. They are one boy and three girls, I found out that later... Anyway one of them is pregnant for sure. (I really hope it is happening to only one of them) She had hard time digging a hole in my yard. Thus, I help her little bit with digging (not using my hand). She made a nest finally, then she covers the entrance back with dirt. Is this a sign of abandoning her nest or protecting it from intruders like other rabbit or rat or cat? If she is abandoning it, I want to give her a man made box nest. Thank you so much for the help in advance.

Answer
Hi Jang. Your bunny is hiding her nest to protect her young. Are you sure she has not already had them? Every time she visits the babies she will uncover the hole then cover it back when she leaves. Sometimes you will not be able to tell for sure where it is. The babies will come out when they are about three weeks old. The bad thing about this is that hawks, owls, cats, dogs and other critters can find her babies are out before you do. You will need to watch carefully for them. I am thinking that your doe has had her babies already. Your other does are probably pregnant also so watch for them to start digging. Hoping for the best for your "little" family.  Pat
