lionhead & albino

Question
We have 2 rabbits, both female, the lionhead is 3yrs old and the albino about 6 mths old.  I would like to know if they could survive the summer outdoors (in their cage/hutch) with the temps reaching high 90's at times in North Georgia.  These rabbits are our daughter's pets but have taken over our house and I cannot stand the constant "bsrnyard" smell.  She has a small playhouse also that I am considering installing a room air conditioner and have the rabbits stay in there.  My husband believes they could survive in a shaded area but I think they are used to the indoor temps and couldn't tolerate the heat.  What would you advise?  Thanks for your help.

Answer
Dear Rona,

Indoor rabbits should not have an objectionable smell, and I think you could solve this problem by addressing what's causing the odor.  I can really help in that department.  And it could mean your bunnies' lives, since outdoors in the summer (or anytime, really) is *not* safe for rabbits.  Not only is the environment dangerous, but there is no such thing as a predator-proof hutch, and I don't even want to tell you the horror stories I know (think:  raccoons, foxes, stray cats...) about rabbits locked up "safe" in hutches over night.

Please tell me the set up of the bunnies.  What are you using for litter?  Can you identify specific problem areas where odor is collecting?

My house is home to 21 house rabbits, and visitors comment on how nice it smells!  So I know I can help you solve this problem if you will share some of the above information with me.

Hope I can be of service!

Dana
