Bunny bruised? or just skin discolored? (not seemingly in pain)

Question
I have a 3 month old Harlequin mix.  He is orange and grey/black and looks like a calico cat.

Today as I was petting him I noticed a darker orange spot on him on just one side of his torso where the skin is purple-ish black.  The rest of his skin (including under his grey/black spots) is pinkish/white-ish.
Also the hair in that particular area feels different, almost like he has dandruff in that area.
I touched that spot and he paid no particular notice (for instance, if I ever touch his toes, he flinches and jumps away so I know he doesn't like that).  I offered him treats and he got up to accept them and zoomed around a bit.

I do know that a couple days ago he attempted an escape by jumping up on his 18" tall cage and then jumping over his 30" pen.  (We heard a crash noise from the other room and found him on the wrong side!)  We've since added lattice to keep him from getting on top of his cage.

He has been kind of lethargic today, but I don't think that's related to the bruise(?) because it was 94 degrees this afternoon! (I have 3 fans on his pen (that he can move in and out of as he pleases) and an ice bin he can lay next to/ climb into if he wants)

My question is, since he doesn't seem to be in any pain, should I still take him to the vet or might  this bruise heal on its own?

Answer
Dear Elaine,

Unfortunately, I can't diagnose something like this without seeing it.  It could be a scrape/scab from his escape episode, or it could be a spot of mange, or another injury.  I can't tell without seeing it.  If you're concerned, I'd recommend you have him looked at by a vet who is experienced with rabbits.  You can find one here:

www.rabbit.org/vets

If your bunny is lethargic, now would be a good time for a vet visit, but please read this, so you'll have some emergency information on how to tell if your bunny is sick:

www.bio.miami.edu/hare/sickbun.html

and what to do until you can get him to a good rabbit vet.

I hope this helps.
