QuestionI have a 12.5-13 yo neutered male who has recently developed a scrotal hernia (vet confirmed). Right now, it is just fat poking through and he seems no worse for wear. Given his age, I have opted to monitor the situation for now (both the rabbit's demeanor and the hernia for changes). I understand that there is a possibility that his bladder or intestine will poke through and the situation will become life threatening. I watch my rabbits very closely, but I am afraid that if things do change, the situation will become life-threatening very quickly and that I will come home or wake up to find that my rabbit is in great distress. Any advice or additional information that you can provide on scrotal hernias is greatly appreciated. I am worried about my old man, but not sure that I should risk surgery at his age. Thanks.
AnswerDear P,
This is truly a case where you're caught between a rock and a hard place. You might want to consider getting a second opinion from a really rabbit-savvy veterinarian:

since this is quite unusual for an elderly bunny. But if it's really a herniation, and the vet thinks there is a risk of an important organ poking through, then it might be worth having bloodwork done to see if he is a reasonable candidate for a neuter and repair of the hernia.
This is a decision that only you can make, and it will depend on the health of your bunny. I hope it's a false alarm, and that nothing more comes of this.
Good luck!
