Hair Loss on Back Near Hips

Question
My bun is loosing hair in clumps near his hip area on his back. He has not shown any signs of discomfort or lethargy. He eats normally. I checked the area very closely and can not find any scores, bumps, ect. He is shedding heavily on the rest of his body, but the hair does not come out in clumps like this one spot.

Answer
Dear Cassie,

I apologize for the delay.  Unexpectedly, a middle school ecology outreach program I was running went crazy at the end, and I'm just now getting my life back.  So sorry!  But I'm back now.

If the bunny doesn't have any bald spots where you pull out the clumps of fur, this is probably just part of his normal shedding.  The areas around the hips and bum are harder for him to reach and groom, so you're doing him a good service by helping him and pulling out those clumps.  I do this for my bunnies, too. :)

If you are not sure this is normal, or if you see bald patches or irritated or flaky skin, then please see:

You can find a good rabbit vet to help you here:

Hope this helps.
