Eye color changed?

Question
QUESTION: Dear Dr. Krempels,
My 4 year old english spot holland lop mix's eyes have recently changed from blue to now a reddish brown. They appear to not be cloudy or have any indications of a virus, infection, or cataracts. Any reason that her eyes have changed in color? Her vet did not seem to be too worried about this but I still am.
Thank you,
Heather

ANSWER: Dear Heather,

This is unusual, but not impossible.  There are some medications that can cause eye color to change in humans.  Has she had any courses of medication lately?

If you are still concerned, then ask your vet for a referral to a boarded veterinary ophthalmologist who can have a close look to be sure this isn't some very odd condition that needs treatment.

Hope this helps.

QUESTION: She has been on baytril several times in the past as well as sulfatrim (septra suspension (the human version). Not to forget metacam, but I don't think sulfanomides, nsaids, or floxicins can do that. I also changed her diet to contain more greens since she has had several gi issues. That seemed to help her gi issues. Everyday she gets kale, parsley, cilantro, celery, and baby carrots. We decreased her pelleted food intake as well. I also make sure she is eating about a shoebox amount of hay each day. One other thing of concern is that she has never really been a big water drinker. Thanks once again.

Answer
Dear Heather,

No, I don't think those drugs would do the trick.  It is a little strange.  But if all else is fine, it might be nothing to worry about.  I'd still contact a veterinary ophthalmologist to make sure this is nothing that might signify a bigger problem.

Hope all will be well.
