urgent nodular myxi group of 12 giant lops

Question
Hi Dana

I have a group of 12 giant french lop rabbits that were all vaccinated against Myxi 3 months ago. On monday of this week three showed symptoms of nodular myxi in varying degrees of severity, mild being a few lumpy nodules on ears to large lumps on ears and noses. The worst affected  rabbit i took to a vet and was prescribed metacam and streptacare injections once daily for ten days. Today another three have mild symptoms of lumps on ears but not, as yet, their noses. Would you advise i take them to the vets? i don't want to stress them unnecessarily if the mild symptoms will not require treatment as it's a 3 hr round trip to the vets!! Also, in your opinion do you feel streptacare and metcam are sufficent treatments for nodular myxi?? and last but not least the youngest is 6 months old would this treatment be appropriate for him or wud he need more aggressive treatment due to his age?, he currently has lesions on ears and nose.

Thanking you in advance, kind regards
andrea

Answer
Dear Andrea,

At least the bunnies are vaccinated, which should improve their chances of full recovery.  Poor babies!

I think it would be wise to get them all to the vet, and ask about whether it might be a good idea to dose them with Equimune IV.  This treatment was developed by a veterinarian (Dr. Matheson) in Australia, who actually cured two rabbits who had *not* been vaccinated and came down with myxi.  If you would like the whole text of her email sent to the House Rabbit Society in the UK, please write to me at dana@miami.edu and I'll send you a copy.

I hope this helps, and that all bunnies recovery fully.

Dana
