Possible rabbit snuffles - help needed!!

Question
Hello Dana,
I hope you don't mind me contacting you.
My 1year old English rabbit has suffered with sneezing since we rescued him, but recently it has been getting worse. He has already previously seen the vet on many occasions for swabs, cell culture and x-rays (all of which have shown nothing to make a diagnosis) and he has had 3 courses of baytril.
The vet thinks it is an URT infection and antibiotics are the best route of treatment. However, our vet has said that rabbits with URT infections can only be given baytril, but this doesn't seem to have any effect on the sneezing and in fact, Rup's sneezing is getting worse. He is sneezing about 20times in a row and sounds very congested in his nose. His x-rays revealed his nasal bones were healthy and his lungs sound clear. I was just wondering if there are any other antibiotics which can be administered to a bun with a URT infection? Also, is there anything else that we can give him to help relieve the condition? (We are currently putting pro-biotics and vitamins in his water to boost his immune system.)
Any help greatly appreciated!
Thank you so much!
Katie

Answer
With Pasturellosis it can take many months in some rabbits to see any improvement. In normal cases it is 2 to 3 weeks but i have had rabbits on it for up to 6 months.
Baytril is the only antibiotic treatment that can reduce the infection with lesser risks to the rabbit.
In some rabbits they have a lifetime of this illness and have to have a permanent supply of Baytril to stop the infection getting any worse.

I don't know if there are any new treatments out there that will help kill off any infection as i am not a vet. You CANNOT treat a rabbit with penicillin as it is toxic to rabbits.

To help your rabbit keep giving probiotics and prebiotics, dust free hay and donot use household detergents or aerosols around him

If you are not happy with your vet seek a second vet.
