Question
My doe gave birth this morning to 2 apparently healthy kits. One is pink and one is grey. I was wondering if you could tell me what colour this means they are likely to be?

Answer
Hi Becky,

Do you have photos?  Unless you see a lot of newborn babies and you understand genetics it is nearly impossible to tell what color they are.  What breed are they and what color are the parents?

The pink could be:  ruby eyed white, blue eyed white, sable point, ermine (non extension chinchilla), Himalayan.  Honestly without seeing them it would be difficult to tell.  Broken reds can appear pink at birth.  A red can be pink but they are agouti marked so you would see a color line on the belly.

The grey could be:  lilac, blue, black (would be a bit darker grey), opal (with white belly lines), blue otter (white belly lines).  The possibilities are pretty much endless.

If you can get me photos I may be able to help but I honestly don't recommend handling them to much.  Not because the mother will reject them but because they can easily be dropped plus we can carry bacteria on our hands.

I am guilty of looking through the kits to try to figure out what colors they are but it is better to wait a few weeks until they are out of the nest and then you will know for sure.

If you want to look at some colors this site might help.
