Question
i have a pet rabbit that has been itching a lot so i purchased ultra care 8 in 1 flee and tick spray. my rabbit is now 6 months and i was wondering if you could give me tips on how to use the spray on my rabbit.

Answer
I would be very cautious using any over the counter medicines on a rabbit. Even if they are designed for small animals, my experience this summer with fleas was a nightmare. No over the counter product worked for my cats or my rabbits. I ended up spending a lot of money on these products and then wound up resulting to going to the vets for advantage. It worked like a dream getting rid of the fleas from day One!

Call around to vet offices. Advantage or revolution can be purchased for sometimes 10.00 a month and if you shop around, you may be able to find an office that will let you bring the rabbit in to weigh and will then give you the medicine without an examination or fees other than the advantage. Don't use front-line as it has been associated with a lot of rabbit deaths.

Here is another product review of Hartz which was commonly used. The rabbit will lick the product off themselves and its chemicals. Not good. Advantage goes on between the shoulder blades and you don`t have to risk getting it in the rabbits eyes and nose which are 100 times more sensitive then ours. For this product to work, you need to saturate the rabbit because the fleas will jump to wherever the animal is dry.

It`s up to you however, and if you decide to use, follow the instructions to the letter. I have never used this product, but reading up on it, here was the info I came across.

"You have to spray it all over and work it into the fur. The fleas just jump to another part of the bunny, especially if you do not get his underside really well. It also gets them all wet and they have to stay warm til they dry off. They will lick it too and I don't think its good for them. I got a little in my mouth and I felt kind of queasy later. To get it on the rabbits' faces I have to spray it on my hand and rub it on, but it doesn't go in far. I should take it back. Just use Frontline for kittens, the convenience is worth the price."
