2mths Old Netherland Dwarf Hydroglycimia

Question
3days ago my baby dwarf bunny have a seizure and we rush her to the vet immediately as she is lying on her side with feet stretch out with faint breathing.

The doc then told us that my bunny have VERY low blood sugar and help to get her back to normal by giving her glucose and asking us to syringe feed her with oxbow critical care for the next 3 days, she also given us a mixture of antibiotic with glucose, and advice us to give her probiotic water. And by the 2nd day, my bunny is eating and drinking on her own alrdy. Doc did mention that she is rather small for a 2mth old bunny. I have been giving her mainly hay and very little pallets.

Problem now is my bunny now seems much more mellow than her usual naughty self, she also easily topple when she tries to stand up, she sometimes lie down on her side suddenly and seems to me like she is resting, I'm not sure if I misinterpret that. She also have difficult cleaning herself, it's like she need need more energy to do those stuffs that she usually do easily. She is not so responsive as compared to one week ago, she is very jumpy. Is this due to the seizure? I'm afraid this is permanent or there is some underlying sickness. My bf says I over-worried.

I'm bringing her back to the vet on sat for medical review. But I can't wait till sat as it breaks my heart to see her so weak. Please advise.

Answer
Hi There

Is this vet a vet who routinely treats rabbits? If he only treats in emergencies, then I would bank dollars to donughts on a misdiagnosis. The problem with emerge vets is that they treat rabbits the same way as cats and dogs and most often is totally inappropriate. Go to rabbit.org and find a listing in your area for a rabbit vet. They have listings worldwide of recognized rabbit vets.

Here is a link explaining reasons for seizures in rabbits. I don't see a glucose deficiency anywhere in those reasons. Did he do bloodwork at all to confirm this diagnosis or was it a guess?

I would be taking him for a re-assessment with a rabbit vet. I really don't think he has this one right...
