Grey REX Bunny has died suddenly

Question
Hi
My beautiful Grey Rex Bunny (we called her Grey Bunny) was about 2.5 years old and has lived happily with her sister Black Rex Bunny (Black Bunny).  She has always been well looked after - lots of good food and exercise and regular check ups at the vets.

Occasionally she has felt limp when picked up in a morning - a few times the vet has seen her and said she is OK which has always been true - after a lazy day she has always returned to her energetic self.   Sometimes this has been tied in with a loose poop or 2 but not runny.

Yesterday morning she felt limp and when in her run she seemed exhausted.  She was eating a little, drinking water and pooping, abut not her normal self.  As we have just had a weather change from an indian heatwave I booked her in to the vets for a check-up.

The vet did a thorough examination and noticed new signs of drooling around her mouth and said she was obviously in pain.  On looking into her mouth they could see teeth spikes at the back which need filing down and we booked her in for a general anaesthetic this morning at 0850.

The vet gave her a pain relief injection.

I asked if she needed any liquids like saline and the vet said they could see she had been eating and drinking and this was not necessary.

I kept a regular watch on her all night.  She seemed a bit brighter when she returned from the vets.  At 0500 this morning I noticed a rapid decline in her health and she couldn't keep her head off the floor.  She seemed so weak.  I tried to get her to another vets without success as they all only open at 0800 and an out of hours vet I managed to speak to could not get her in for the op before 0850 anyway.

Her heart continued to beat less strongly until 0750 when her little heart stopped beating and she died.

I am so upset as this has happened in less than 24 hours - she has received much love and been cared for so well.

It seems so drastic to die from toothache alone - could something else have caused it?  Why did she decline so rapidly even after seeing the vet?

The Black Rex Bunny is very sad now but continues to eat and skip about - will she be OK without a best friend to play with?

Answer
hi Angela firstly i am sorry for your loss .
from what you say i suspect your grey rabbit was epileptic -this is quite common in rabbits and this is why at times you found she was limp, i don't think it was her teeth problem that caused her death.
and yes the black rex will be fine on her own.
Dave.
