My bunny died

Question
Hi! I feel really awful right now, my bunny died 2 days ago and I can't stop crying. He was very young, 9 months, and he looked healthy, he ate regularly, he defecated normally, no diarrhea,he ran and looked ok. It was a sunny day (I live in a small town 50 km near Milan, Italy) so my dad put him outside, he started jumping around and all. Then 2-3 hours later he found him laying dead, with a little blue on the lips, but he didn't look inside the mouth. When I got there I saw he also had something around the mouth like some white-yellowish liquid, but very little and dry.
I have no idea what happened. I found some mushrooms in the garden, the were round and light brown, and they looked bitten so maybe he was poisoned but why would he eat them? He had grass, hay and other stuff around him so...
Moreover, the day before I was holding him and he got scared, probably for a dog or some noise, and he jumped off my arms, and he had very tiny cut in the lip in front of the big teeth but he was ok all day after that, and also the morning after... until the afternoon of course..
Or maybe he choked on something... Oh one last thing the blue was already gone when I found him (after 20 minutes that my dad told me he was dead, cause I wasn't home)., and the body showed no other injuries...
I really don't know what to think, maybe I should have taken him to the vet as soon as I saw the cut but it was so small and it healed in 10 minutes...
Thank you for your time! Let me know...
Greta

Answer
Hi Greta,

I'm sorry to hear your bunny passed away.

It could very well have been the mushrooms.  Generally if you are not able to determine which are okay, and which aren't, you have to assume they all are dangerous.  The blue lips are indication of the body going into shock, which can be a symptom of poisoning.

A tiny cut, if there had been an infection setting in, he would have not acted totally normal 2-3 hours before death.  He'd have been sickly.  So I'd rule that out.

Domestic rabbits do not have the survival instincts to tell which plants are poisonous and which are safe.  It is one of the reasons why if you have an indoor house rabbit, to keep them inside and keep plants and flowers generally out of the areas they are in.  For their safety.

Nothing I can tell you now will make you feel better, but I want you to remember these words over the next weeks and months.  He was a bunny who was greatly loved by you.  It sounds like he knew that.  He was a happy bunny and was well taken care of by you.  He went very quickly and didn't suffer a lengthy, worsening illness.  He was loved every day with you.  And if you're a Christian like me, one day you'll get your bunny back.  And neither of you will ever be sick, or hurt, or die, ever again.

The love you have for him doesn't ever stop.  Keep loving him, missing him.  In time you won't beat yourself up so much about it.  He loved you, he wouldn't want you to feel that way.

Again, I am sorry for your loss.
