Rabbit peeing on the floor

Question
Hello,

I have a 6 year old rabbit named Sophie.  Unfortunately, she is not spayed.  By the time we learned the importance of spaying, she was already older and her vet recommended not spaying her, also because she is being treated for an external abscess.  We also took in a foster bunny 3 months ago.  He is a one year old neutered mini-rex.

I have had Sophie since she was 2 months old, and she has never missed her litter box.  But today, she very purposefully walked over to a corner near the new bunny's pen, and peed on the floor!  I think maybe she's being territorial, but the new boy has been here 3 months and she's never done this before.  Also I thought maybe it was related to her medication (baytril) but she has been on that for months, and has never peed on the floor before. Why would she suddenly do this?  She has no trouble getting to her litterbox, and besides her abscess her general health is great.

Thanks!

Answer
Dear Bethany,

She might never have done it before, but the way she did it suggests this is certainly a message she's sending to the other bunny.  It might not be negative.  She might actually *like* the new bunny, and is sort of trying to get his attention.

If they are hostile to one another, then it seems that she's just escalated the Cold War by sending a brand new style of insult.  Bunnies never do stop inventing.  :)

Have you tried to introduce them?  If not, it might be a good time to do this, so she will not develop these territory-marking habits for good.  Here are some good articles that will help with bonding:

Hope that helps.
