Question
Hi, my rabbit delivered baby bunnies yesterday morning. All was well in the morning and the babies are doing well, however the mother rabbit (Maisie) is acting very strange. The first thing I noticed was that she only delivered two babies - I did not see her giving birth so I do not know if there were more. This is her first litter. However, since yesterday midday, she has not been eating or drinking and seems very limp and lifeless. She does not ever let me pick her up yet today she did not move a muscle when I did. I have felt her tummy and it seems like she may still have some babies inside her - yet I am no expert so I don't really know. I just need some advice because the vets are not getting back to me becuase they are very busy. I am very worried that she is either very ill or she has some dead or alive babies yet to deliver. Please help.

Answer
Hi Sandy,

A listless rabbit is a sick rabbit.  I understand the vets are busy but is there any way you can find a 24 hour animal hospital.  There is really not much you can do at home except try to get her to eat and drink until morning.  If she does have a stuck kit she may need to be spayed.  Most rabbits do not eat or drink when they are in labor so there is a possibility that she still has babies to deliver.  Normally once all the babies are delivered they will eat and drink immediately.

I really wish there was more I could tell you.

Pam
