Mrsa in English Lop ear

Question
HI,

My 5 1/2 years old English Lop has been diagnosed with Mrsa in his left ear. This has come from a lab report. I would say that he has been affected for 5 months now. Early spring we tried a round of Baytri and it did not go away totally. We began treating it more aggressively the end of May.  My veterinarian has treated it with Baytril , Baytril Otic, Chloramphenicol, and Eas Otic.

The Eas Otic , one spray daily in the affected ear for 15 days. It has been the most effective treatment, but we cannot continue with it.

He is on Batril Otic only now. The last dose of Eas Otic was last Thursday. He is back sliding  and I just got permission from my vet to begin with the Chloramphenicol again.

Your insight would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you,

Kym

Answer
Dear Kym,

If the culture results indicated that the MRSA is sensitive to fluoroquinolones (e.g., Baytril, ciprofloxacin, marbofloxacin (Zeniquin) and aminoglycosides (e.g., amikacin, gentamycin), then ask the vet about putting bun on a combination of Zeniquin and gentocin (or tobramycin) otic drops.

You might also try things like Vetericyn:

which is a powerful disinfectant that can really help kill off the biofilm inside the ears.

I hope this helps.
