Urine scald , skin has dark grey area

Question
Hello Dana,
I was wondering if you could help me figure out what's wrong with my bunny.
Recently I've bought a new cage and the pee doesn't drain easily in this cage so i would have to clean up the pee constantly if not my bunny would step and lie on her own pee.
But the past two weeks I've been swamped with work and have neglected cleaning the pee regularly.
Today when I was grooming my bunny I realized that inner legs had matted fur stained with dried urine, the skin is slightly red on both legs and there some bald slightly inflamed areas. On her left leg, theres a bald area that has turned dark grey. I believe it's the skin that has turned this color as I cannot feel any bumps or lumps. It's about the size of an index fingernail but irregular in shape, the area seems bald. I did check the same area on the other leg and the skin there is a normal pink color. Does this sound like anything sinister? Like something that could potentially lead to an amputation of leg of not treated?

I've since cleaned the area with damp cotton balls and dried them off, it seems that her legs are sensitive as she would run away from me when I'm cleaning her legs (possibly because of the scald).
I know that urine scald is an indicator of urinal problems but she is peeing normally, drinking & eating /pooping well. She's also runny normally and using her legs as per normal so there's no signs of injury.
I was wondering if the dark grey skin could be fur growing back? She is a tabby colored bunny with mostly grey undertones . Or could it be skin damaged caused by the urine? Or something more serious..

Hope to hear your views soon, thank you in advance :)

Answer
Dear Abby,

This does sound like urine scald from your description.  If you think the configuration of her hutch might be contributing, then an easy way to remedy the situation would be to completely cover all flat surfaces where urine collects with 100% cotton bath mats that can be changed out and laundered regularly when they get soiled.  This way, the urine won't soak into her feet and bum when she sits in it!

To get her cleaned up so she's more comfortable and the skin can begin healing, please read these instructions for a wet butt bath:

http://www.bio.miami.edu/hare/buttbath.html

Be sure to dry her thoroughly with a blow dryer on "warm" (NOT HOT!) and put a very thin layer of triple-antibiotic ointment (no additives; just plain) on the really sore areas.  It will soothe her tremendously and help speed healing.

If the cotton mats don't fix the problem, then she might well have a urinary tract problem causing leakage.  Please see:

and find a good rabbit vet via the international listings here:

I hope this helps.
