Juliani training

Question
I recently purchased a pet Juliani pig for my mother as a birthday gift. The pig, Warren, is about 10 months old and we are having a difficult time training him in general. He is mostly potty trained but if my mom isn't near his box when he has to 'go' he just lets loose right at her feet. This is obviously a concern, as well as his newfound biting/ nibbling problem. We have tried every technique we know to train pigs but nothing seems to help. PLEASE help us with any training advice you might have. Every little bit will help! Thank you so much for your time!

Answer
Hi,

The key to training pigs is consistency. They are smart enough to realize that *if* they can get away with misbehaving once, they will do it again and again. They will pount and sulk when they cannot have their way. Also, pigs respond poorly to physical punishment. Dogs and cats are natural predators. In the wild, they must hunt to eat, and from time to time the prey will fight back. Pigs, on the other hand, are natural prey animals, and so they respond diferently than dogs and cats.

I trained my pig by taking him outside or to his potty box as soon as he woke up, before and after eating, and at 2-hour intervals (if he was not sound asleep!). Gradually the 2-hour intervals became 3, then 4, etc.

My friend Prisilla is a professional pig trainer, you may have seen her pigs on TV. I suggest you contact her, NELLIESTAR@aol.com. She has various training materials and a free chat group. She really knows her stuff.

Good Luck
