lab blocks vs rat mix

Question
Hi!  I got 2 male rats recently.  I've read that lab blocks are the most nutritious diet for them, but I initially started them on a rat and mouse mix per recommendation from the pet store.  I notice that whenever I put the blocks in their bowl, they grab them and take them to their igloo to hide, and when I clean their cage, the blocks are still there.  I'd like to switch them to primarily blocks with mix just a couple of times a week, but I'm afraid they're not eating the blocks and will be hungry.  What is your advice or suggestion on this?  Thank you so much for your time and attention!

Answer
I've noticed after many years of having to deal with rediculously ingnorant, money grubbing pet stores, that basically, they know nothing. You're doing the right thing, however, researching and alternating lab blocks and mix. I'd stop using pet store food though. Especially ones that are "Rat and MOUSE". Chances are, they're not eating those little bitty seeds or just aren't nutritious enough.

Suebee's mix is a popular homemade mix that is ultimately cheaper and much better for your rats. It is used all over the world and is what I feed my rats. Here's the link to the recipe.

Under "Staple Diet" it describes the best type of lab blocks to use as well.

Good luck!
